Easter Trail 2025 looms – now with map

The PTB, with funding from Penge SE20 BID, will once again be organising an Easter Trail, on and around the High Street, from 4 till 5:30 on Saturday 19th April. As usual the aim is to go to one of the two starting venues, the Goldsmiths or the Alexandra, to collect the sticker sheet and then to proceed to collect the stickers from the participating businesses listed below. At the finishing point, the Bridge House, our volunteers will be waiting with the prize for completing the event (an egg!).

All we ask in return is that the children wear something Easter or spring related. Or dress as a Penge dino… but whatever you wear, have fun, but take care crossing roads.

It’s official… Penge is the coolest place in London

Ok, we knew it already, but our little old hamlet is now officially cool. Following Penge’s naming in the Sunday Times, as one the eleven coolest places in UK, and only one in London, a flurry of follow-up reports have appeared. The articles concentrate on three themes: the street artwork, the community and the local businesses.

Witch way to turn…. it’s Halloween 2024 – updated with map

It’ll soon be time for our local little monsters to take to the streets in search of sweet treats… Halloween falls midweek this year but our annual event will be the Saturday beforehand. Between 4 and 5:30pm on the 26th October, children dressed as ghost, witches, ghouls, etc will follow our Trail and visit participating shops on, or just off, the High Street. Thanks once again to all the businesses taking part. Here’s a map of the route.

Roll out the egg-stravaganza – it’s the PTB Easter Trail

March 30th – Easter Saturday – will see the little egg seekers of Penge converge on the High Street once more with our annual Easter Trail. The Trail commences at either one of two start points, the Goldsmiths or the Alexandra pubs, where our maps are available to those that need them, and the sticker sheet. The idea is then for the littluns to follow the route collecting stickers at participating venues along or just off the High Street, to the Bridgehouse pub near Penge West. Here they will be given an Easter egg as a prize. It’s all free, funded by Penge SE20 BID and manned by PTB volunteers, and gets the youngsters out about and reminds you of our lovely High street businesses. Plus of course it’s great fun! All we ask is that the littluns wear a bonnet, dress as a chick, lamb, flower, or as a Dinosaur, as after all, this is the home of the world famous Dinosaurs in CP Park.

Our spooky fun day looms… it’s the PTB Halloween Trail

Our Halloween Trail will be running again on Saturday 28th October from 4 till 5:30 for fun, japes and of course lots of sweet treats. The participating businesses are on the map below. Ask your littluns to dress up as ghosts, spooks and ghoulies and they will be rewarded.

NB: The Trail is normally busy and the children of course get excited. Please keep them safe, especially when crossing roads.

Quality comes in small packages at Tension this month

Talented Penge artist Tim Carson has an exhibition titled Amongst Giants this month at Tension Fine Arts on Maple Road. The 6th is a preview then every Thursday – Saturday.

As part of the exhibition Tim has erected and installed one silver and nine bronze ‘Manager’ statues in public view around Penge to form the 2023 Penge Sculpture Trail.

It’s eggstremely close to being the PTB Easter Trail- NOW WITH MAP

Every Easter the PTB joins up with the local traders to organise a lovely family day. And this day is fast approaching!

The PTB Easter Trail takes place on Saturday 8th April from 4:30 till 5:30. The event involves local children, accompanied by their parents or guardians, wandering down the High Street (and some roads just off it) collecting special easter stickers from participating venues, which they attach to the trail map and at the final location, the Bridge House by Penge West, they will be presented with an egg to scoff! The event is free and funded by the Penge SE20 BID.

There are two starting points, the Goldsmiths and the Alex to choose from, where you can pick up a copy of the sticker sheet and a map. The map will also be available on here in a few days time. Participating venues this year are:

Raise a babyccino for Penge’s Baby Cafe

Baby Cafe Penge has continued to support local new parents and their babies since it opened in 2014. As well as a warm welcome, compassionate breastfeeding support and evidence-based information, Baby Cafe offers hot drinks and homemade cake, with an opportunity to chat to other parents who may be experiencing similar challenges. One mum said “Baby Café has been my weekly lifeline. I don’t think I would’ve been able to continue breastfeeding without it. I can’t thank you enough.” Another said “I had lost all my confidence in my ability to feed my baby but when I came to the group and got help, I got good advice and support and felt empowered to breastfeed.”

At a time when they may already be feeling overwhelmed, learning to breastfeed is sometimes difficult for new parents, and feels very important to them. At Baby Café they listen to and support parents to feed their babies however they choose to.

The group is facilitated by a qualified breastfeeding counsellor and a team of dedicated volunteers who are all trainee breastfeeding peer supporters. It is a free of charge service, open every Friday 1-3pm at Melvin Hall Community Centre, 48 weeks a year. Breastfeeding support is woefully underfunded, making this service invaluable. You can help them continue to help new families by donating the cost of a cuppa and cake. They would also be eternally grateful for larger donations from local businesses that would get a mention on their Facebook page www.facebook.com/Babycafepenge

Some people call residents of Penge Penguins so it’s obviously appropriate to have lots of them on display over the winter in our High Street shops. The Penguins have been organised by Penge SE20 BID and remain until 2nd January, so enjoy this free family fun, and make sure you given them a far from frosty welcome.
