The people of Penge have spoken.
We asked our Facebook and Twitter followers to vote for their favourite Penge shop, eaterie, pub and takeaway. And vote they did – in their hundreds.
Without further ado, we’re very happy to announce their Penge Picks.
Drum roll please…
Best shop: Murray Brothers
Head to the high street’s very own master butcher, and we guarantee you’ll leave with a huge smile on your face. Not just because their meat’s brilliant (it is) but also because they do excellent chit-chat, remember your kids’ names and call you ‘young lady’ even if you’re on the wrong side of 35.
Highly commended: Penge Food Centre, Alexandra Nurseries
Best café/restaurant: Alexandra Nurseries
The plants are gorgeous and the shop’s always good for a potter. But we won’t lie: it’s the coffee and homemade cake that keep us coming back time and again. Yum.
Highly commended: Café Casbah, Friends of Flavours
Best pub: Goldsmiths Arms
They only reopened a few months ago, but already the ‘smiths has taken SE20 by storm. We reckon it’s the combo of a super-friendly atmosphere and slightly rough-around-the-edges look: what could be more Penge?
Highly commended: Bridge House Tavern, Moon & Stars
Best takeaway: Nemo’s
It may not be right on the High Street, but the people of Penge have no problem finding Nemo’s: this friendly Maple Road chippie is a real family favourite.
Highly commended: Himalayan Kitchen
And finally… In view of their phenomenal efforts as employers, retailers and critically, outside of business hours, promoters of the High Street and the area in general, the Penge Tourist Board would like to present a special SE20 Community Award to Ian and Judy Barrington of Designer Drapes. Thanks.
